What’s the difference between CHL (Concealed Hand Gun License) and LTC (License To Carry) in Texas?
In 2017 the State of Texas decided to change the name from CHL (concealed handgun license) to LTC (license to carry). This is because if you’re licensed to carry, then you’re allowed to open carry in Texas.
Concealed Hand Gun License – CHL
Until 2017, the official term in Texas for the license needed to carry a handgun was “concealed handgun license,” or CHL. Some other states use the term “concealed firearm license” to mean the same thing. A CHL means the license holder is permitted to legally carry a handgun as long as it’s not in plain view or clearly displayed.
License To Carry – LTC
In 2017, Texas officially changed the term “concealed handgun license” to “license to carry” (LTC) a handgun. This decision was made because open carry became legal in Texas in 2016. Since this license now applies to both concealed and open carry, it makes sense to simply refer to it as a license to carry. Therefore, the answer to what’s the difference between CHL and LTC is that there is no difference. These are terms that refer to the same exact thing in Texas.
Are holsters required for concealed carry in Texas?
No, a holster is not required for concealed carry in Texas. However, holsters are required for open carry. If you plan to open carry your weapon, it must be in a shoulder or belt holster. However, since there are no specifications as to what type of shoulder or belt holster you can use, you do have options. Their are multiple options for Holsters. What to know our favorite holsters, email us at curtis@ezchl.com
What are the most common disqualifications for someone wanting a CHL/LTC in Texas?
There are a handful of CHL disqualifications in the Texas concealed carry laws. Here are some of the most common reasons you might not be able to open carry in Texas:
- You have a recent misdemeanor or felony (speaking of which, take a look at our recent article: Can you buy a gun with a misdemeanor?)
- You have a specific type of misdemeanor or felony (recent or not)
- You are not older than 21
- You have a restraining order placed against you
- You are diagnosed with a specific disorder
With an LTC in Texas, there are still places you are unable to go with a firearm — like churches, hospitals, amusement parks, and schools. Make sure you fully know the Texas CHL/LTC Laws in Texas.
